Featured speaker: Billy Mills
Billy Mills, 1964 Olympic Gold Medalist, is the only American to have ever won the 10,000 meter run. His victory is considered one of the greatest upsets in Olympic history. Mills has devoted his life to youth as a national spokesperson for Christian Relief Services and as the founder of Running Strong for American Indian Youth.

Mills is Lakota Sioux and was raised on the impoverished Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. He was orphaned as a boy and faced prejudice and cultural discrimination throughout his childhood. A running scholarship to the University of Kansas led to his commission as an officer in the US Marine Corps. Mills’ childhood through his Olympic story was portrayed in Running Brave, a1983 feature film starring Robby Benson.

Billy Mills embodies the Boys & Girls Club experience that inspires and enables youth to find hope and opportunity through education, character development, and by living a healthy lifestyle.
