Spotify Released Annual Songs of the Summer Predictions

Spotify released their annual Songs of the Summer predictions, as well as a new Summer Heat Map with a list of musical trends that we can expect to see this summer.

Each year, they put together this list based on what their global curation team thinks will be popular that summer, according to Spotify. These predictions, reflecting listening in the Northern Hemisphere, are based on streaming numbers, current trajectory, and future forecasting.

One of their summer streaming trends was Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” being the most-streamed song with “summer” in the title, followed by “Summertime Sadness” by Lana Del Rey, “Summer” by Calvin Harris, and “Summer of ‘69” by Bryan Adams.

They also found that there has been a 2,000% increase in user-generated “coastal cowgirl” playlists on Spotify, referring to “laid back, sun-soaked” songs from artists like Zach Bryan, Fleetwood Mac, Kacey Musgraves, Miley Cyrus, and Taylor Swift.

Pickle ball has been on the rise lately, and with that there has been a 205% increase from May 2022 to 2023 in “pickle ball” playlists being streamed – another one of their summer streaming trends. These pickle ball playlists include songs like “Don’t Stop Believin” by Journey, “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire, “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor.
