This Year's Oscar Ceremony Will Be Packed with Pop & Rock Stars...and a Possible EGOT

The Academy Awards aren't really supposed to be focused on music, but given all the pop stars and hit songs you'll see and hear at this Sunday night's Oscar ceremony, you'd be forgiven for thinking that you're watching the Grammy Awards. This year's nominees for Best Original Song from a Motion Picture include the #1 song in the country -- "Happy," by Pharrell Williams, from the animated film Despicable Me 2 -- and a song from the #1 album in the country: the soundtrack of the animated smash Frozen. That song is, of course, "Let It Go," sung by Idina…

Gwen Stefani & Gavin Rossdale Welcome Son Apollo Bowie Flynn

Congratulations are in order for Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale: the couple has welcomed their third son. Announcing the news on Twitter, Gavin wrote, "Welcome APOLLO BOWIE FLYNN ROSSDALE  2/28/14 (bowie and Flynn =mothers' maiden names)."  There was no explanation given for "Apollo." Apollo joins his big brothers Kingston, 7, and Zuma, 5, in the Stefani/Rossdale clan.  Back in January, Gwen announced the gender of the baby on Instagram. She posted a photo of herself wearing a crown, and captioned it, "I was ready to hand over the crown. but I guess I am still queen of the house." She…

Teen No More: Happy (?) Birthday, Justin Bieber

Starting this weekend, we can no longer refer to Justin Bieber as a "troubled teen star."  That's because the troubled singer turns 20 today, March 1.   When Justin turned 19, he declared it to be the "worst birthday," after getting into an altercation in a London nightclub after it denied entry to underage members of his party.  He subsequently left the premises -- or was ejected, depending on whom you believe.  But will his 20th birthday be any better?  Let's look at the evidence. Justin is currently on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, accompanied by the headline "Bad Boy:…

Phillip Phillips Offers Sneak Peek of New Single "Raging Fire"; Candice Glover's Album Sales Disappoint

Phillip Phillips has posted on Instagram a sneak peek of his new single "Raging Fire," which he'll be performing next week on American Idol.  As Phillip has said in interviews discussing his new material, the song is definitely a bit more rocking than his previous songs, but it still retains the feel of his songs "Gone Gone Gone" and "Home."  The song features a string session and heavy percussion, as Phillip sings, "Come out come out come out/you turn my soul into a raging fire." "Raging Fire" will be included on Phillip's sophomore album, due out this spring.  The song…

This Year's Oscar-Nominated Songs: The Most Actual Hits Since 1998

Back in the '70s and '80s, the songs nominated for the Best Original Song Oscar were often massive hits, but in recent years, that's become less frequent.  However, this year seems to be a banner one: out of the four nominated songs, three of them have reached the Billboard Hot 100.  The last time that happened was 1998. U2's "Ordinary Love," the nominated song from the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, had debuted at #99 on the Billboard Hot 100.  "Happy," the Pharrell Williams song from Despicable Me 2, is #1, while "Let It Go," from Frozen, is #18. …

Miley Cyrus Throws a "Bangerz Prom" for Teen Superfan Who Asked Her Out on YouTube

A few weeks ago, a Miley Cyrus superfan named Matt Peterson asked her in a video to go to the prom with him.  Miley responded that said she wasn't available that night, but instead offered to "hang" with him when she played his home state of Arizona.   Well, she's made good on her promise: on Thursday night, the two got together for what they called a "Bangerz Prom," after the name of Miley's current tour. As documented blow-by-blow on his Twitter and Instagram accounts, Peterson arrived at the concert in a tuxedo jacket decorated with tongues, with a giant foam…

Kristen O'Connor was eliminated from American Idol on Thursday night.   The 24-year-old from Sebastian, Florida, had fallen into the bottom three with Malaya Watson and MK Nobilette. But Harry Connick, Jr. informed her that he, Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban could not reach a unanimous decision. The one-hour results show began with the top 13 performing OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" and Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive." Britney's Vegas Show "Piece of Me" Is Officially a Hit

Before Britney Spears launched her Las Vegas show Piece of Me at Planet Hollywood, there was a lot of speculation as to whether someone so young -- well, compared to other Vegas headliners -- could draw enough of a crowd to make the deal profitable.  Well, that question as been answered. USA Today reports that Piece of Me, which opened in late December in front of a crowd that included Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus, has grossed just under $11 million to date, and all 16 performances through February 22 were sold out.  That's 72,000 tickets for the hit-packed, high-production…

Pharrell Disses His "In My Mind" Album: "I Wrote Those Songs Out of Ego...The Money Was Too Loud"

Pharrell Williams is excited about his upcoming solo album G I R L, which will be in stores on Monday, but he'd rather not think about his previous solo album, In My Mind, which came out in 2006.  Looking back, the Oscar-nominated star says that the album, which was not a big hit, was all about his own ego; he claims it had "no purpose." "I wrote those songs out of ego, talking about the money I was making and the by-products of living that lifestyle," he tells GQ. "What was good about that? What’d you get out of it?…
