News » State to require more carbon monoxide detectors

Mar. 10, 2010
People who live in single-family homes and duplexes will need to have carbon monoxide detectors, under a law signed by Governor Doyle today.

Sen. Dave Hansen of Green Bay was a co-author of the measure, and he says it was modeled after the rules for smoke detectors.

The law requires that people have CO detectors on every floor of their home, including the basement. Attics and storage areas would be exempt.

Hansen says they're not creating a fine, but when someone sells their house, home inspectors will have to check for the detectors.

In a new house, the detectors need to be hard-wired, with a battery backup.

The new law takes effect next February.
