News » Assembly will try to override veto
Feb. 16, 2010 Next Tuesday, the state assembly will try to override one of Governor Doyle's vetoes.
Last year, the Legislature passed a bill that would strip the governor's power to appoint the DNR secretary and give it to the natural resources board. Doyle vetoed the measure last November.
Assembly Majority Leader Tom Nelson says the natural resources board had the appointment power until 1995, when it was given to former governor Tommy Thompson.
The Kaukauna Democrat says even if the override is successful, the governor will have a big influence on the DNR because he appoints the board's members.
Nelson doesn't agree with Governor Doyle's opinion that taking away the governor's appointment power will hurt job creation.
A two-thirds majority vote is needed in the Assembly and Senate to override a veto. The Legislature hasn't successfully done that since 1981. |
