News » Jury: Schmidt intentionally killed estranged wife

Mar. 11, 2010
The man accused of murdering his estranged wife in Grand Chute is now facing a life prison sentence.

A jury of eight men and four women from Portage County returned guilty verdicts last night against Scott Schmidt. The former Appleton firefighter shot and killed Kelly Wing Schmidt last April, and jurors convicted him of first-degree intentional homicide.

He was also found guilty of a lesser charge of reckless endangerment for shooting his mother-in-law, Barbara Wing.

Outagamie County judge John Des Jardins read the verdicts around 8:45 p.m. Schmidt was also convicted of bail jumping.

Outagamie County district attorney Carrie Schneider says Wing Schmidt's family is very happy with the verdicts, but the impact of the crime will be long-lasting.

Schneider says Wing just wanted a guilty verdict on the murder charge, and that she didn't care what the jury decided on the count of attempted murder.

Schmidt will receive an automatic life sentence, and Des Jardins will decide in May whether Schmidt should ever be eligible for parole.
