News » Former teacher sentenced for touching student
Mar. 31, 2010 A former teacher at a Catholic elementary school in Appleton will spend 17 years in prison for inappropriately touching a 10-year-old student.
27-year-old Daniel Callan of Menasha pleaded no contest in November to charges of child enticement and showing a child a sex act. Callan was a fifth grade teacher at St. Bernadette elementary school.
Outagamie County Judge Dee Dyer sentenced Callan today to significantly more time in prison than the four to 10 years prosecutors recommended. He says he took into account sexual abuse allegations made by other children in Winnebago and Brown counties. Charges haven't been filed in either of those cases.
Before he was sentenced, Callan apologized to the student and said that he wishes the incident never happened. Callan also apologized to his own family for not being truthful with them from the beginning.
After his prison sentence, Callan will spend 18 years on probation. |
