News » Local DA supports surcharge to avoid layoffs

Mar. 31, 2010
As long as he doesn't lose any prosecutors to layoffs, Winnebago County's district attorney is open to adding a surcharge to forfeiture cases.

A group of state lawmakers is proposing the fee to offset a budget deficit of over $1 million. District attorney Christian Gossett says he would support "pretty much any idea" at this point.

District attorneys offices around the state are already dealing with a shortage of prosecutors, and the department of administration wanted to lay people off to balance the budget.

Gossett says he's thankful that the legislature is taking action, because officials with the department of administration don't understand the issues or the problems.
