News » Health care groups prepare for higher fees
Mar. 31, 2010 Health care organizations may end up footing the bill, after lawmakers raided $200 million from the state's medical malpractice fund to balance the budget.
That's one of the conclusions drawn in a legislative audit bureau report that found that the fund is in poor financial standing.
ThedaCare Controller Keith Taubel says the state's program is the organization's secondary malpractice insurance. So even though they don't use it, they have to pay fees into the fund. Taubel says the extra costs will be passed on to customers.
He says other hospitals that use the state's patient compensation fund as their main malpractice insurance could face huge fee increases.
The Wisconsin Hospital Association filed a lawsuit claiming that the state doesn't have the authority to take money from the fund. The Wiscosnin Supreme Court is considering the case. |
