News » Summer rain easing northern Wis. drought

July 16, 2010
Summer rains are easing drought conditions in northern Wisconsin, but more moisture is needed.

Roy Eckberg is a meteorologist at the National Weather Service's Green Bay office.  He says parts of northern Wisconsin have been under extreme drought conditions for several years, and many lakes are several feet below their normal depth.

He says from June to mid-July, about 15 inches of rain fell on the area, and it's helping northern Wisconsin rivers rebound.

Eckberg says northern Wisconsin lake are up about six to 12 inches, but they're still several feet below normal.  He says more rain is in the forecast for the next week.

Eckberg says it will take several years of above-average rain to complete restore the lakes and reservoirs.
