News » St. Joe's Food Program turns to gardeners

July 22, 2010
A local county ag agent is looking back on the tenure of Wisconsin's ag secretary.

Secretary Rod Nilsestuen was on the job for more than seven years under Governor Doyle, and he drowned yesterday in Lake Superior yesterday.

Matt Glewen is the agriculture agent for the UW-Extension in Calumet County, and he says Nilsestuen worked to find common ground on difficult issues that faced the industry.

Glewen says Nilsestuen was also a strong advocate of the ag industry, and he worked to keep it competitive in the national and global markets.

Nilsestuen was swimming in Lake Superior while he was in Michigan's upper peninsula to do volunteer work.
