News » Wis. cracking down on tax fraud
Apr. 2, 2012 The state's revenue department is teaming up with the federal government, to find people who fraudulently claim the earned income tax credit.
Revenue department spokeswoman Stephanie Marquis says some people claim someone else's child, or don't report all of their income to get the credit.
She says by comparing state and federal tax records, they can find discrepancies.
Marquis says Wisconsin is the first state to take part in the pilot program.
The state flagged more than $12 million in false claims last year, using its own records. By teaming with the federal government, Marquis says they could identify $2.4 million in additional fraudulent claims, each year. |
