News » 911 call of woman landing plane released
Apr. 5, 2012 The 80-year-old woman who landed her dying husband's plane in Door County Monday night remained relatively calm.
Authorities released the 911 call between Helen Collins and a dispatcher. Collins first told the woman that her husband is unconscious, and she's not a pilot.Collins then said she knows she's near Luxemburg because she can see the windmills.
A licensed pilot was called in to guide Collins as she landed. He followed her plane, as his wife, also a licensed pilot, instructed Collins from the ground about how to use the controls.
The plane bounced once as Collins landed it at Cherryland Airport in Sturgeon Bay. It came to rest on its nose. She only had a sore back.
Her 81-year-old husband was pronounced dead of a heart attack, shortly after the plane landed. |
