News » Gov. wants to take DNA sample after arrests
Apr. 10, 2012 Governor Walker wants police to collect a DNA sample from people arrested for certain felonies, and sex-related crimes.
Under current law, the state can't force someone to submit a sample until they're convicted, or if they get a warrant.
Twenty-five other states, and the federal government collect DNA sample after an arrest for some crimes.
Walker says he'll include the proposal in his next budget.
Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen says the proposal would cost his department quite a bit of money, but he supports it.
Walker says if police take a DNA sample when they arrest a suspect, they could connect the person to the crime more quickly, and keep dangerous people off the streets. |
