News » Statute of limitations removed for some crimes

Apr. 13, 2012
Rape and attempted murder cases are no longer bound by the statute of limitations, under a bill signed by Governor Walker, in Green Bay yesterday.

Rep. Jim Steineke wrote the bill after hearing about a woman who was stabbed 20 times in Appleton's Hoover Park in 1999.  Her attacker was never caught, and now he can't be prosecuted, because the six-year statute of limitations expired.  Steineke says others are facing similar situations.

The town of Vandenbroek Republican says since he introduced the bill, his office received several calls from people wanting to remain anonymous, asking if the proposal applies to past crimes.  Steineke says that shows there are offenders out there, and they're getting nervous.
