News » Heroin deaths increasing in Winnebago Co.

Apr. 18, 2012
Drug users who are switching from prescription painkillers to heroin, are behind a dramatic increase in Winnebago County overdose deaths.

Coroner Barry Busby says in a normal year, there are about 15 overdose deaths, and this year, they're on pace to more than double that.

Lt. Brad Dunlap of the Lake Winnebago Area MEG unit says during a 48-hour period last week, local police responded to six heroin overdoses.  He says it's very easy to use too much of the drug, because even a small change in purity can be fatal.

Dunlap says drug users are switching from Oxycontin to heroin because pharmaceutical companies changed the prescription drugs to make them more difficult to abuse.
