Apr. 18, 2012 Volunteers in the Fox Cities were in the spotlight last night, in downtown Appleton.
About 700 people were at last night's "Celebrating Our Volunteers" dinner at the Radisson Paper Valley hotel.
Jerry Koenig won the Volunteer of the Year Award, for his work with teens at Good Shepard Church in Chilton. He teaches religious education, and lets the teens hang out once class is over.
Cathie Tierney is this year's Community Service Award recipient.
Kimberly high school senior Michael Quensell took home the Youth Scholarship Award for his work with the Key Club and Special Olympics.
West Business Services and Harbor House won the Business Partnership of the Year honor. Dan VanDaalwyk of West Business Services says their employees go beyond just giving money, they spend time helping clients with resumes. He says to date, the company has hired five former clients.
The Excellence in the Arts honor went to musician and composer Maury Laws.
St. Mary's Central robotics instructor Greg Cheslock brought home the Volunteer Educator Award. He says many of the kids on the team want to pursue engineering, and others find out they'd be good at it too.
Ray Durkee won the Health Care Volunteer Award for serving on hospital boards and working with the Community Health Action Team.
Ruth Haviland took home the Mentoring Award. |
