News » Appleton to look closely at recycling carts
Apr. 19, 2012 In hopes of boosting recycling, Appleton leaders will look into getting recycling carts for property owners.
The city council voted 13-3 last night to explore the possibility.
Mayor Tim Hanna says he might include the carts in his budget. They would be similar to the ones the city already uses for automated garbage collection.
Right now, other communities that have carts collect about 10 percent more recyclables than Appleton.
Hanna says the city would save money on landfill tipping fees, if recycling totals increase. He says it would also extend the life of the landfill.
The carts could cost $1.2 million. The city would charge property owners, but officials would have to work out the details. One proposal calls for charging a quarterly fee of $1.50, for 10 years. |
