News » Eastern tent caterpillars out early
Apr. 26, 2012 Eastern tent caterpillars are out early in Wisconsin this year, thanks to the early spring, and apparently, they're hungry.
Mike Hillstrom of the DNR says they can eat all the leaves off some trees, so property owners might want to get rid of their thick white tents or webs.
Hillstrom suggests scraping the tents from the trees and dumping them in a bucket of soapy water.
He says the caterpillars are especially fond of leaves on crab apple and black cherry trees. He says while the pests can eat a lot of leaves, they will grow back on a healthy tree. |
