News » VT funding fix up in the air

Apr. 26, 2012
Unless Congress takes action, Valley Transit stands to lose its federal funding by the end of September.

A proposed solution is in jeopardy, after the House of Representatives included it in the same transportation bill that would start the Keystone Pipeline project. President Obama has threatened to veto any bill that includes the pipeline.

Valley Transit spokeswoman Nikki Voeltzke says Green Bay Metro and many other bus systems need federal lawmakers to take action.

The proposal would base federal funding on how many buses a system uses during peak hours, instead of population.

Voeltzke says it's taking some time, because their bill is part of a much larger package.

Valley Transit has also been trying to find a solution at the state level. A state transportation committee is holding a public listening session today at Fox Valley Technical College. It runs from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Bordini Center.
