News » State tourism spending up 7.6% in 2011
May 4, 2012 The tourism industry gave the state's economy a boost last year.
Visitor spending climbed 7.6 percent, to nearly $10 billion. That generated $16 billion in total business sales.
Governor Walker announced the numbers this afternoon, during a stop at Bay Beach in Green Bay. He says those dollars have quite an impact. He says that supports more than 181,000 jobs that are connected to tourism.
Walker says the increase comes after he boosted the state's tourism marketing budget by 20 percent. He says they focused that money in the Twin Cities and Chicago markets, because people haven't been traveling as far because of the economy and gas prices.
Figures from the tourism department show more than 95 million people visited the state last year.
While he was at Bay Beach, Governor Walker rode the Zippin Pippin roller coaster with Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt. |
