News » Fishing season opens after strange spring
May 7, 2012 The fishing season got under way over the weekend, and anglers were dealing with strange circumstances.
DNR fish management director Mike Staggs says they aren't sure what to expect early on, because of the spring weather.
He says the ice melted from many lakes three weeks, or even a month sooner than normal. He says that affected the timeline for spawning, so many species have already left their typical spawning spots.
Staggs says they went through their records, and couldn't find another spring with record-warm temperatures in March and a chilly April.
The DNR has a searchable database on its website, so anglers can check for any changes in regulations or bag limits on lakes.
