News » Appleton school layoffs virtually non-existent
May 8, 2012 One Appleton teacher could lose a part of her position because of budget cuts.
The school board issued final layoff notices last night, and the district's chief financial officer says they based the decision on declining enrollment in Latin classes.
Don Hietpas says they would reduce the position by 0.2. He says they were able to avoid more layoffs because of attrition.
Hietpas says they're looking at other ways to balance the budget, without laying off teachers. He says right now, they're projecting a $2 million shortfall.
Hietpas says teacher salaries could remain flat, and they're exploring some health insurance changes to reduce costs.
In past years, the number of layoff notices were in the double-digits, and many were called back.
Hietpas says they were able to wait longer before they issued notices this year, so they had better budget projections. |
