News » Group applauds Obama gay marriage support
May 10, 2012 A Wisconsin gay rights group hopes President Obama's change of heart on gay marriage leads to changes in Wisconsin.
For years, President Obama said he supports gay civil unions, but he stopped short of endorsing gay marriage.
The president announced yesterday that he now thinks gay marriage should be allowed.
Fair Wisconsin executive director Katie Belanger says Obama is the first sitting president to take that stance, and it could help sway public opinion to their cause. But she says overturning the state's constitutional gay marriage ban won't be easy.
Belanger says the group hopes to overturn the gay marriage ban by working with lawmakers, instead of fighting the issue in court. |
