News » St. Norbert grads hear controversial speaker
May 14, 2012 The gradation ceremony went off without a hitch yesterday at St. Norbert College, despite having a controversial speaker at the ceremony.
Chicago archbishop, Cardinal Francis George, gave the commencement speech.
More than 2,000 people petitions the school to reconsider his invitation after he referenced the Ku Klux Klan, while talking about the route and schedule of a gay pride parade in Chicago, last December.
St. Norbert junior Larry March is a member of the school's Rainbow Alliance. He says they didn't want to disrupt the ceremony, so they handed out ribbons to graduates who wanted to show support to the gay community.
St. Norbert College president Thomas Kunkel says he stands by the decision to stick with Cardinal George. He says it sparked healthy discussions on campus. |
