News » Testimony begins in church fraud case
May 15, 2012 Attorneys gave their opening statements this morning, in a fraud case against the Catholic diocese of Green Bay.
Todd and Troy Merryfield are suing the diocese, claiming that church officials knew about past sexual abuse allegations against former priest John Feeney, before he was transferred to St. Nicholas parish in Freedom. He assaulted the boys while he was the priest there, in 1978.
John Peterson is an attorney for the Merryfields. He says a psychological evaluation of Feeney from 1974 shows that the church knew he was a risk.
Patrick Brennan is representing the diocese. He says church officials had no idea that Feeney was a risk to children, until after he abused the Merryfield boys.
The trial is scheduled to last two weeks. Witnesses are taking the stand this afternoon. |
