News » Appleton in top 5 of national bicycling contest
May 18, 2012 Appleton is near the top of a national competition that encourages people to ride their bikes.
Tom Walsh of Fox Cities Greenways says the city is currently in fifth place, out of more than 625 metro areas, in the National Bike Challenge. He says they hope more people sign up so the city can finish first.
Walsh says they're not asking people to go for long rides, but to start using their bike for short errands.
Walsh says being a bike-friendly city is a tool for economic development, because it's something that companies consider when they're looking to move.
Kimberly-Clark is sponsoring the competition, and it runs through the end of August. It started at the beginning of the month, and so far, about 600 people in Appleton have already logged more than 20,000 miles.
People can sign up online at the National Bike Challenge website.
