News » Report: Wis. lost 1,446 teachers in 2011-12
May 21, 2012 Wisconsin schools cut more than 1,400 teaching positions for the current school year.
That's according to a report from the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance.
Research director Dale Knapp says tight revenue limits were the biggest factor, but the collective bargaining law also had an impact. He says districts that have growing enrollments, and forced employees to pay more for their benefits actually added teachers, but those with flat or dropping enrollment that did not increase benefit payments had to cut.
Knapp says the state could lose more teachers next school year.
Knapp says state schools cut teachers for the previous two years. He says the losses over the three years add up to between 2,500 and 3,000. |
