News » Church fraud lawsuit going to jury
May 21, 2012 Jurors will begin deliberations today, in a fraud case against the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay.
After hearing testimony last week, jurors heard closing statements this morning.
They'll decide whether church officials knew about past child sexual abuse allegations against former priest John Feeney, before he was transferred to St. Nicholas Parish in Freedom. He abused Todd and Troy Merryfield after the move, in 1978. The jury will also have to determine, if that knowledge rises to the level of fraud against the diocese.
The Merryfield brothers claim the church knew Feeney was a danger to children, and didn't warn the community.
Church officials claim they had no reason to believe that Feeney was a risk to children in the parish. |
