News » Jury: G.B. Catholic Diocese committed fraud
May 21, 2012 Two brothers will share $700,000 after a jury found the Green Bay Catholic Diocese committed fraud.
Brothers Troy and Todd Merryfield sued the diocese for fraud, after learning that church officials knew that priest John Feeney was accused of having inappropriate sexual contact with children, before the bishop transferred Feeney to St. Nicholas Parish in Freedom in the 1970's.
In 1978, Feeney molested the boys.
The Merryfield's argued that several church officials knew about the past allegations, but Feeney was transferred anyway, and the community wasn't warned about his past.
Attorneys for the Merryfields asked the jury to award the brothers a combined $2.7 million. The attorney for the diocese wanted the jury to cap the award at $100,000.
Jurors decided to award Troy Merryfield $475,000 and Todd Merryfield $225,000, for a total of $700,000. |
