A national victims rights group says a jury's decision is the first time the Green Bay Catholic Diocese has been found liable in court, for sexual abuse by priests.
Todd and Troy Merryfield sued the diocese for fraud, arguing that leaders didn't warn the community about earlier allegations against former priest John Feeney.
Feeney was transferred to St. Nicholas Parish in Freedom, and he molested the Merryfield brothers in 1978.
John Pilmaier is the Wisconsin director for the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. He says this is the first time that the diocese has been held accountable for covering up a priest's actions.
Jurors will consider punitive damages against the church tomorrow.
Leaders for the diocese say they're considering an appeal. |
