News » Group calling for more church investigations

May 23, 2012
A national group is calling on Brown County's district attorney to look for more cases of sexual abuse by priests.

John Pilmaier is the Wisconsin director of the Survivors Network for those Abused by Priests.  He says a fraud trial against the diocese proves that church officials were covering up for abusive clergy.

On Monday, jurors ruled that the diocese committed fraud when former priest John Feeney was moved to St. Nicholas Parish in Freedom in the 1970s, and church officials didn't notify the community about past abuse allegations.  In 1978, Feeney molested two brothers.

Pilmaier says that could be the tip of the iceberg.  He hopes more cases can be prosecuted.

Pilmaier believes the church may be protecting about 50 employees who may have abused parishioners.
