News » Brothers drop claim in clergy sex abuse suit
May 23, 2012 A jury won't have to decide whether to award more damages to two brothers, in a clergy sex abuse lawsuit.
Nearly 35 years after they were molested by a former priest, Troy and Todd Merryfield dropped their request for punitive damages from the Green Bay Catholic Diocese.
An Outagamie County jury already awarded them $700,000, after determining that church leaders committed fraud when they didn't notify the community about previous allegations against former priest John Feeney.
Feeney was transferred to St. Nicholas Parish in Freedom in the 1970s, and he abused the Merryfield brothers in 1978.
The diocese released a statement this morning, apologizing to the Merryfield family. Deacon Tim Reilly says they will continue following their strict policies to keep children safe. |
