News » Brothers want more info on abusive priests
May 24, 2012 Two brothers dropped their claim for punitive damages from the Green Bay Catholic Diocese, in a sex abuse lawsuit.
A jury already awarded $700,000 to Todd and Troy Merryfield, after the two argued the diocese committed fraud by not notifying the community about past sexual abuse allegations against a former priest.
John Feeney was transferred to St. Nicholas Parish in Freedom in the 1970s, and he molested the two brothers in 1978.
Todd Merryfield says they wanted to claim the high road, and not seek more money. He called on the diocese to release documents about other abusive priests.
Troy Merryfield says the Christian thing to do, would be to admit they were wrong. Instead, he says officials continue to cover up.
The jury was supposed to decide yesterday whether to award punitive damages.
The diocese released a statement, apologizing to the Merryfield family for what happened. Deacon Tim Reilly says they will continue to adhere to their strict policies, to make sure children are safe. |
