News » Procedure helps avoid open-heart surgery
May 25, 2012 An Appleton cardiologist is one of a few doctors in the country who can clear completely blocked arteries in the heart, using a minimally invasive procedure.
Dr. Kahldoo Alaswad says for years, doctors used a catheter and balloon to clear partially blocked arteries, but the procedure didn't work if they were completely blocked.
He says he's learned a new technique that does work, by entering through an artery in the wrist.
Alaswad says the new procedure is much easier on the patient. He says with open-heart surgery, the patient has to stay in the hospital for several days, and rehabilitation takes several weeks. Alaswad says now, patients can usually go home the same day.
Alaswad is training other cardiologists across the country on how to perform that procedure. |
