News » Room tax revenue rising
June 11, 2012 Tourists contributed nearly $70 million to local communities through room taxes in 2010.
That's the finding of the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance. Alliance president Todd Berry says nearly 270 Wisconsin communities charge the tax to people staying in hotels, and that number has been rising steadily for the past decade.
He says that led to an increase in room tax revenue, even while the economy was floundering.
Berry says 70 percent of money raised through room taxes, is supposed to be spent on tourism related projects, but it's hard to track.
He says some communities are accused of giving some of the tax money to chambers of commerce, or putting it into their general budget. |
