News » Demolition starts on Catholic school in Kaukauna
June 15, 2012 Crews are tearing down a former Catholic school in Kaukauna.
St. Mary's school on W. 8th Street opened in 1928, and Rev. Jerry Pastors says the tornado that touched down in the city last year took off about one-third of the roof. He says while they were using the first floor of the building, the damage forced them to make a decision.
He says it wasn't cost effective to renovate the school, but they were able to salvage some items, like ceiling tiles.
Pastors says they found a time capsule in the cornerstone of the school, and they're going to open it up July 1, after the 10:30 a.m. mass.
Pastors says years ago, probably all of the teachers were nuns, and they had between 40 and 60 students in a classroom.
Once workers clear the site, Pastors says they'll use it for parking. |
