News » Summer school popular in Appleton
June 18, 2012 More than half of Appleton students are expected to take part in the district's summer school program this year.
The classes started today, and director Gail Bowers McKay says last year, about 8,000 kids either took a class or went to a camp. The district's enrollment is about 15,000.
She says some classes focus strictly on academics, but in courses like cooking and sewing, teachers still incorporate reading and math, so students are working on those skills.
Bowers McKay says the high school-level classes are for students who are behind on their credits.
There are a variety of morning courses for elementary and middle school students. The camps are in the afternoon. |
