News » Senator: DOT should pay more for Safe Ride
Mar. 15, 2010 A state lawmaker wants the state to pick up 80 percent of the tab for a program that helps people get home safely if they had too much to drink.
Sen. Kathleen Vinehout of Alma wants the state department of transportation to foot more of the bill for Safe Ride by using money that will be generated through a new surcharge on drunk drivers.
The democratic lawmaker says nearly 54,000 people used the program last year.
Right now, Safe Ride programs get their money through private fundraising efforts, and the DOT matches donations, dollar-for-dollar.
An assembly committee is considering Vinehout's proposal. |
