News » 'Snowbirds' should claim home state on census
Mar. 16, 2010 People who live in Wisconsin but spend their winters in the South are reminded to pay attention when they fill out their census questionnaire.
Wisconsin League of Women Voters Director Andrea Kaminski says there is a slight change in this year's census that could hurt the state. She says "snowbirds" will get census forms at their winter and permanent homes.
In the past, they could claim their Wisconsin residency on the census form they receive at their winter home, but Kaminski says that's no longer an option.
Kaminski says if people fill out the census at their vacation home they'll be counted as a resident of that state, instead of Wisconsin. She says that would cost the state federal funding. The census is also used to determine the number of seats each state gets in the House of Representatives. |
