News » Health officials expect spike in Lyme disease
June 19, 2012 People spent a lot of time outdoors this spring, because of the warm March weather, and that could lead to a spike in Lyme disease cases this year.
Appleton public health officer Kurt Eggebrecht says deer ticks hang out in tall grass, and they look for a host in the spring. He says the number of cases has been rising steadily for the last decade, and people should regularly check themselves for ticks if they walk in the woods, or tall grass.
He says if you find one, you should use a tweezers to remove it.
Theda Care infection preventionist Bette Casey says the weather could cause this year's spike, but better testing, more deer, and other factors could also be behind the more gradual rise in cases.
Last year, more than 2,300 new cases of Lyme disease were diagnosed in Wisconsin. |
