News » Authorities bust food stamp fraud in G.B.

June 13, 2012
Investigators in Brown County say they've uncovered one of the largest cases of fraud in the food stamp program, in the state.

Sheriff John Gossage says they're seeking charges against the owner of Beach Road Liquor in Green Bay, and three family members.

He says they would let people use the Qwest debit cards they receive through FoodShare, to buy alcohol and tobacco, and then charge them twice as much. Gossage says if someone wanted cash, they would take their card and PIN number, and use it at various stores, spending twice as much on items.

He says investigators were able to identify more than 1,200 transactions just from last month, totaling more than $10,000.

Jenny Hoffman of the county's human services department says staffers noticed something was going on. She says they're trying to crack down on fraud because there are people who really need the program.

The district attorney's office will consider filing several felony charges. The card-holders could also face charges, and they lose their FoodShare benefits for up to a year.
