Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler has shared a statement condemning Donald Trump after the president referred to Haiti and African nations as “s***hole countries.”
“Trumps [sic] comments about Haiti, reflect nothing on the amazing country, and only on his own racism and xenophobia,” Butler tweets.
Arcade Fire member Regine Chassagne, who is married to Butler, is of Haitian descent. The band’s song “Haiti,” which appears on their 2004 debut album Funeral, pays tribute to the country and her parents, who fled the nation during the dictatorship of François Duvalier in the ’60s.
“Haiti is one of the most special and amazing places I’ve been on this earth, and we need more Haitian-Americans,” Butler continues.
Chassagne is the co-founder of KANPE, a charity in support of Haitian “health, nutrition, housing, education, agriculture and leadership.”
