The Brown County Sheriff’s Department is spending thousands of dollars a month to send jail inmates to other facilities because of overcrowding.
Yesterday, 66 people were in Outagamie, Oconto, Marquette, and Green Lake counties.
Sheriff Todd Delain thinks an increase in evidence and new technology may be delaying court cases. He says it takes time to go through all the information and figure out what’s important to the case.
Delain also believes large-scale investigations are also playing a role because many people can be arrested at the same time.
The Brown County board has talked about expanding the jail but it could take several years to get any new beds ready for inmates.
