Democrats are officially introducing a bill to put universal background checks in place for gun sales in Wisconsin and GOP leaders don’t plan to take it up.
Assembly Minority Leader Gordon Hintz of Oshkosh hopes they can still force a vote in the Assembly if necessary. He says other states have done it and there have been some positive results. He thinks lawmakers owe it to the public to do everything they can to make sure they’re safe.
Hintz joined Governor Evers and Attorney General Josh Kaul at a press conference at the Capitol yesterday.
Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke of Vandenbroek says it’s disingenuous to suggest that requiring background checks on private sales would have prevented tragedies in the state and country. He says Republicans are committed to expanding mental health services.
