There’s real concern new 5G cellphone capability will impact the ability of an airplane to detect altitude.
Appleton International Airport spokesman Patrick Tracey notes while that’s true, the upgrade will not impact any airport in Wisconsin except for General Mitchell International in Milwaukee. He says Appleton International uses a Category 1 Instrument Landing system.
According to Tracey, Cat 3 ILS allows a pilot to put an aircraft on autopilot for landing in extreme low visibility. The real concern for those larger airports will come in July when Verizon and AT&T are scheduled to power their 5G networks up to full strength.
