SHAWANO, Wis–An uncooperative driver in a historic military vehicle disrupted traffic on eastbound Highway 29 and kept Shawano County law officers in standoff mode for over four hours Sunday evening. Shawano County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a military-style vehicle traveling down the highway with a flat tire that was creating a traffic hazard.
Attempts to pull the driver over were initially unsuccessful before the vehicle stopped near Highway G in the Town of Seneca after a slow half-mile chase. The driver refused to leave the truck, which he owned. Negotiators talked with the man for four hours before he took off in the vehicle.
Sheriff’s deputies say the man drove the vehicle from the eastbound lane across the median into the westbound lane driving the wrong way into traffic. The vehicle then returned into the eastbound lanes before being stopped by a Shawano County Highway Department snow plow.
The man continued to refuse to come out and had to be forcefully removed from the vehicle by deputies. No one was injured in the incident. Highway 29 eastbound, however, was closed to traffic during the incident. The driver has not been identified.
