It seems like about this time every year, the age-old debate resurfaces: Is a hot dog a sandwich?
The answer is no. A hot dog is not a sandwich.
Meriam-Webster defines a sandwich as, “two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between.” Some may argue that by that definition, a hot dog is a sandwich, but no. A hot dog is not between two or more slices of bread, nor is a hot dog bun a “roll.” That’s why they’re called…wait for it…buns.
No one says, “Hey, come over before the football game so we can BBQ some burgers and sandwiches.” Of course not, that’s ridiculous. That’s because a hot dog is not a sandwich. If you were to ask a hot dog vendor for a sandwich, he’d think you’re a fool.
In 2015, The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council made their official ruling: The hot dog is not a sandwich, but more “a category unto it’s own.” Even the 15-time Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest champion, Joey Chestnut says a hot dog is not a sandwich, and uh, I think he’d know!
Calling a hot dog a sandwich is like calling a hot pocket a pizza. It’s just not.
Eddie and I debated it on-air today (he thinks it’s a sandwich, what a dummy), and there’s a poll up on the KISS-FM Twitter page now.
Let us know what you think!
