Okay, technically they added “TBH” last year, but every year the Merriam-Webster dictionary adds new words to, you know, keep up with the new kids’ slang.
I realize it’s just my opinion, which probably doesn’t mean much to anyone, but adding some of these stupid words is ridiculous. Some of them are literally just slang words that you will probably never hear again after 2 or so years. I guess it keeps the dictionary people employed and keeps us in the loop with how the kids talk.
We’ve all been there. Nothing makes you feel older and lame than having to look up what the heck that word you heard a young person say.
This year, Merriam-Webster added 370 new words and phrases to the dictionary. I didn’t even know phrases were a part of the dictionary. I picked out some of my favorites and figured I’d share with you. Among the new words this year, we have:
Yeet
By far the dumbest, but maybe the funniest word added to the actual dictionary. Yeet means to be enthusiastic or surprised. It could also mean to throw something with force or to be thrown or launched.
Sus
I actually used this one last week on air. Sorry. It just means something is suspicious, or suspect.
Adorkable
I actually can’t stand this one. It’s an endearing term to call someone weirdly cute. Like an adorable/dorky person.
Cringe
I like this one because it’s a word I can almost feel. Cringe. We’ve all done or said things before and by looking back, just makes us cringe because it’s so awkward.
Pwn
Spawning from the good old internet, pwn means to own, or get owned. That pretty much means to dominate someone at something, a video game, conversation, argument, etc.
Metaverse
Basically a virtual environment they’re trying to make happen that you are a part of using a VR headset. It’s like living first-person in The Sims, which is kinda cool, kinda weird, and kinda creepy all at the same time.
Laggy
No surprise a word like this makes the list after the popularity of Zoom calls and e-learning. Laggy means when something buffers, gets bogged down, or glitchy.
Subvarient
For obvious reasons. A word I wished I never heard again. Ever.
Pumpkin Spice
Okay first of all this is two words and not even really a phrase, is it? Also, how is this not already in the dictionary?
