One of the largest and most popular fashion events, the Met Gala, will be taking place tonight at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Traditionally, the Met Gala takes place on the first Monday of every May. It is a charity benefit put on by Vogue’s editor and chief, Anna Wintour, to raise money for The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and a place for designers and celebrities to come together from all over the world to showcase their most innovative designs. Tonight, it will be hosted by Penelope Cruz, Michaela Coel, Roger Federer, Dua Lipa, and of course, Anna Wintour.
Each year, there is a theme, or dress code for the event. This year’s Costume Institute exhibition, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” will celebrate the full work and life of the late Karl Lagerfeld. The dress code is, “in honor of Karl.” Lagerfeld was one of the most influential figures in fashion. Throughout his life, he worked at prominent fashion houses such as Chanel, Patou, Balmain, Chloé, and Fendi – in addition to founding his namesake brand.
According to Teen Vogue,
Per the Met, Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, the theme of both the gala and the display, will honor “the artistic methodology and stylistic vocabulary of Karl Lagerfeld’s designs through recurring themes across more than 65 years, from the 1950s to his final collection in 2019.”
Accompanied by Lagerfeld’s sketches, more than 150 of his pieces will be on display at this year’s event.
So who can you expect to be there? Well, the event typically hosts about 600 attendees, including well-known actors, singers, young creatives, and more. This year, La La Anthony, Derek Blasberg, Chloe Fineman, and Emma Chamberlain are expected to host Vogue’s livestream of the red carpet.
According to The CUT,
Some confirmations so far include: Florence Pugh will be attending for the first time, as Valentino’s brand ambassador. Priyanka Chopra and Elle Fanning also told reporters they’ll be there. Meanwhile, Rita Ora has made several mentions of her Met Gala plans in recent Instagram posts and Brooklyn and Nicola Peltz-Beckham both confirmed they’re going; Brooklyn described their joint couple’s look as “classic.”
It will be interesting to see who does make an appearance, what the looks of the evening will be, and what people will do with this year’s theme, “in honor of Karl.”
